What a wonderful country we live in. There are so many people that know more about travelling abroad than they do of their country of origin. And it is such a shame. Have you ever experienced the awesome landscapes of the Lake District, or the misty, eerie beauty of a Scottish spring dawn? If not, then, quite frankly, you have been missing out.
In a previous post, I suggested that staying at home instead of going abroad was a great way to save money. It got me thinking of the many different ways that could be done. So, for your pleasure and inspiration, here’s how to see Britain when you are on a budget.

Plan Your Tour
Your first steps for a budget tour of the UK will require a lot of planning. Have a look around at the places you want to visit, and mark the all down. Decide on the length of time you want to go for, and then plan a route. The AA route planner is very useful for this – and completely free!
Invest In A Tent
If you have a car, then you have a perfect way of getting around the country. And with a tent, you can almost pitch up wherever you like. It is such a cheap way of getting around; it is surprising that so many people avoid tent-sleeping like they would the plague.
Sure, it can be uncomfortable at times, but if you ask me, there is no better way of getting closer to nature than sleeping in a field under a millimetre or so of material. Make sure it is waterproof and large enough to accommodate all of your group. I would also suggest investing in a tent with separate rooms, leaving one spare for luggage and valuables when you intend to stay a few nights.
Invest In A Motorhome
If life in a tent just isn’t for you, then think about a motorhome instead. You will be surprised at how cheap it can be to pick one up second hand. You could also rent one. Prices start from around £50 per night for a good one, and although this is similar to a cheap hotel, it’s still good value for a family.
Plus, you have the bonus of being able to go where you want. One thing is important though – you may need special insurance. You can compare motorhome insurance here, or check your policy to see if you have cover.
Go By Rail
If you plan well enough in advance, you can get serious discounts on train fares. Plan your routes with companies like Megatrain and the money you save in fares can be put towards a hotel or B&B.
It is worth investigating because it can often work out cheaper to use this method, rather than spend on your fuel. You will also miss out on having to invest in the buying or rental of a tent or motorhome. Look into budget hotels, pack wisely, and spend time working out your route. I can guarantee if you arrange things early enough you will be surprised how little it might cost.
Hopefully, these tips will inspire you to get out and see this amazing country. You don’t have to spend a fortune, and the memories you have will be priceless.
